Sex is important for humans as it offers both physical and emotional benefits that contribute to overall well-being.

According to WebMD, it can improve cardiovascular health, alleviate stress and anxiety, promote better sleep, strengthen the immune system, and even help relieve pain.

Additionally, there is a connection between depression and sexual activity.

The global mental health crisis has become more prominent in recent years, with depression being a longstanding issue. However, it is now more widespread, partly due to increased awareness and the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to NAMI, in 2023, an estimated 58.7 million adults in the U.S., or 22.8% of the adult population, experienced a mental illness.

While s**ual activity may not be a cure-all, it can offer some relief. During intimate moments, the brain releases a range of “feel-good” hormones, including dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin.

Dopamine, often called the “reward” hormone, triggers feelings of pleasure and motivation. Endorphins, which act as natural pain relievers and mood enhancers, surge by as much as 200% during intimate acts, helping with pain and stress relief.

Experts from Shantou University Medical College explored the link between sexual activity and depression, revealing how frequent intercourse may help alleviate mental health issues. According to their theory, the release of “feel-good” hormones during sex could potentially improve mental well-being.

For the study, researchers recruited 14,741 adults aged 20 to 59 from the United States and had them fill out a survey about their sexual habits. Participants were also asked to complete the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, a tool commonly used to diagnose depression.

The findings showed that approximately 7.5% of the participants experienced moderate to severe depression.

The results of the study highlighted that the positive effects of sexual activity on improving depression were most significant among individuals aged 20 to 30.

The conclusion stated: “A sexual frequency of one to two times per week provided the greatest protective effects on psychological well-being, and may serve as a reference for mental health evaluation and monitoring during depression treatment.”

Co-author Professor Mutong Chen remarked: “Regardless of sexual orientation, sexual activity offers benefits such as enhanced well-being and quality of life, significantly contributing to mental health.”

The study also identified the optimal frequency of sexual activity to combat depression, suggesting that engaging in sex between 52 and 103 times per year (roughly one to two times per week) can improve mental well-being.
