Fourteen-year-old Knox MacEwen was reportedly taken to the hospital after collapsing during the event.

Following the heartbreaking news, tributes poured in across social media. One user wrote, “That is devastating. Sending prayers to his family.”

Another shared, “Heartbreaking. My deepest condolences.”

A third added, “So tragic. Another young life gone far too soon.”

Knox MacEwen was a dedicated member of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) at Western High School in Davie, Florida.

The JROTC program, sponsored by the U.S. Armed Forces, aims to instill self-discipline, confidence, and leadership in young students.

Western High School Principal Jimmy Arrojo confirmed the heartbreaking news of Knox’s passing in an official announcement.

In a heartfelt statement, Principal Jimmy Arrojo shared: “One of our JROTC students passed away this morning after being transported to the hospital. I want to offer my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, teachers, and classmates as they mourn this great loss.”

According to NBC Florida, Miramar Police responded to a medical emergency at Everglades High School around 9 a.m., where the run was held as part of a JROTC event.

Reports indicate the teen went into cardiac arrest following the physical activity and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to the Mayo Clinic, cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating due to an abnormal rhythm. It is noted as a leading cause of death among young athletes.

Speaking with Today, Dr. Adam Kean highlighted the unpredictable nature of the condition, saying: “This is the awful reality… we can’t predict when the terrible event is going to happen.”

A GoFundMe organized by Knox MacEwen’s family reveals that his mother is facing this heartbreaking loss while still recovering—both physically and financially—from a recent battle with cancer.

The fundraiser honors Knox as a deeply cherished member of his community, describing him as a dedicated JROTC student, an active volunteer in his church’s children’s ministry, and a beloved brother, son, grandson, nephew, and friend.

The campaign was created to help cover funeral expenses and provide the family with the time and support they need to grieve. At the time of writing, donations have exceeded $90,000—far surpassing the original $30,000 goal.
